Return to School: While a student-athlete can take time away from sports during the recovery of a concussion, it is often difficult to take that time off from their school requirements. In many cases, concussion symptoms will surface during the course of academic challenges, such as listening for long periods of time in a classroom, taking tests, and doing extensive homework. For a concussed brain, these challenges become even more difficult and can result not only in poor academic performance, but also prolonged recovery time. To help address these issues, academic accommodations are offered to concussed students. These may involve taking tests untimed, receiving pre-printed notes before classes, and having reduced workloads. Once the student-athlete is symptom-free, then a gradual, stepwise approach towards full reintegration into academic activities is recommended.
